With the 33rd selection in the 2008 Draft, the Minnesota Timberwolves select Robin Lopez out of Stanford.

Post Draft: The Minnesota Timberwolves have decided to give Kevin McHale an 8 year extension after securing both Lopez brothers in this years draft.  Fuck me if this happens.

Now for all seriousness.  This would be my worst nightmare and I’m sure that we will take the first Lopez at #3.  Hell, we might even package together our second round pick and one of our young players (i.e. McCants, which would really bother me) to move up to take the other Lopez.  Analysts think they can succeed in the NBA as a tandem.  Do these analysts not watch college basketball?  They couldn’t even get past the sweet sixteen in the NCAA tournament.  Get serious analysts. 

If Kevin McHale decides to take Lopez at #3, we will have one serious case of Deja Vu here in MN.  In 1992, we finished with the worst record in the league and landed the third pick.  The first two picks that year were Shaquille O’Neal and Alonzo Mourning, fuck me sideways on that one.  Then with the third pick we decided to take Christian Laettner.  If we take Lopez we would be missing out on two can’t miss prospects again and settling for another big white guy like Laettner.  Seriously, is there a single great white player that isn’t foreign in the NBA? No, the best is probably Korver, who is purely a shooter. 

I almost had a heart attack today when I was listening to the lottery on the radio driving home from work and learned that we had secured a top 3 pick.  Then, I almost decided to run my car into the median because I was so angry to find out we landed the 3 spot.  And no, not because I don’t think there will be a great player on the board, there will be that.  Because if we had a top 2 spot Kevin McHale wouldn’t be dumb enough to pick someone other than Beasley or Rose.  Now, that he has a choice at 3, I’m certain he will fuck it up.

I think this is a 3 player draft.  Fuck all the analysts that say it’s only a 2 player draft.  Months ago I was telling all my friends that as long as we got a top 3 pick I’d be happy.  Therefore, if I was GM I would take O.J. Mayo at #3.  He will sell tickets and easily replace Corey Brewer (who is still too aneroxic to play in this league) at the 2 or 3 spot.  Plus, Mayo has the biggest upside of anyone else on the board after Rose and Beasley.  And in the second round hope that CDR falls into our laps and snag him.  Then our starting roster for next year would be:

PG: Randy Foye
SG: O.J. Mayo
SF: Rashad McCants
PF: Ryan Gomes
C: Al Jefferson

Bench: Sebastian Telfair, Craig Smith, CDR, Corey Brewer, Marko Jaric

A very nice young core that would probably again struggle, but at least would be fun to watch.  Not to mention we would probably get another high pick to add to this roster the following year.  And next summer is also the year we have all of our cap room to maybe add a high profile player to join all the young guys.
