2008 Kentucky Derby

I was supposed to go to the Derby this year and was extremely frustrated that it didn’t happen.  Instead I went to Madison for another weekend of Debauchery (those stories will come later).

Big Brown was a pretty big favorite going into the race.  I pride myself on not betting like a complete square when it comes to all of my sports bets.  And yet I turn into a square each year when the Derby comes around.  I’ve had great success being a square and betting on the favorite in the past few years.  How often can you get 3.85 to 1 odds100 on the favorite of any sporting event?  Never.  Or how often can you get 3.85 to 1 odds on a horse (or team) that has never lost? Never.  Only in the Derby because there are 20 fucking horses.  I repeat, this horse has never been beaten.  By the time the Preakness rolls around Big Brown is going to be a 1 to 1 favorite or worse.  I will be riding the favorite hard and might be riding my initial 2 unit investment with my profits on him for the next race.  I can’t wait.

The best part about this race was that I wasn’t the only one winning.  My drunk ass convinced all of my non betting friends to bet on the race eventhough they knew nothing about it and weren’t even planning on watching it.  Since they were all drunk they each put good sums of money on it and all won at 3.4 to 1 odds.  I love the Derby and I will not let anything stand in my way of attending next year.  And if Big Brown wins The Preakness, I might be flying out to the Belmont Stakes to see if Big Brown can capture the triple crown in person.

Side Note 100: The odds I’m using were straight wagers I placed on Big Brown to win the Derby using matchbook, not the standard horse racing ‘to win’ bets.
