Going into this show I wasn’t expecting much.  Maybe just an above average show with some topics up my alley.  I’ve been missing a scripted teenage series to get hooked on since The O.C. went off air less than a year ago.  First, I had Dawson’s Creek, then I had The O.C and ladies and gentleman, I’ve found my next one, Gossip Girl.

I actually gave this show a chance on its season debut becuase it’s from the same producer as The O.C., but I passed out less than ten minutes in because of this gossip girl giving the audience the play by play the whole time.  Thankfully, I’ve now realized that was just to set up the show.  I was also hesistant to give the show a chance because you never know if the show is going to get cancelled.  For example, I downloaded Hidden Palms last summer and watched the first episode, liked it and then found out it was cancelled.  So, I was waiting to see if the people who decide whether shows get renewed deemed it the next O.C. or the next Hidden Palms.  Fortunately, it got a lot of press and chances are looking good there will be another season.  Therefore, I gave it another chance and boy am I happy with that decision.

The first episode provided the groundwork for the show and was pretty good.  Its got what every other teen show has: gorgeous girls, dickhead guys, backstabbing, crazy parents, sex and tons of drama.  The only thing I haven’t quite got used to is the narrator (a.k.a. gossip girl) who narrates the show by writing what’s going on in the main character’s lives on her blog.

In the first episode a fight broke out reminiscent of the O.C.’s series premiere.  The more I think about it, the main guy (Dan) reminds me a lot of Ryan.  Not as big of a bad ass, but he did punch a guy in the face and he is swooning the most popular girl in school.  The two main girls (Serena and Blair) are in a constant battle to be the queen bee of the school.  I’m surprised the show hasn’t provided us with the cliche line, keep your friends close and your enemies even closer.  And the introductory song is quite good as well, not O.C. good but catchy nonetheless.

If you’re going to start the show don’t read this paragraph, I give away the plots of many of the episodes.  As Bill Simmons says

***SPOILER ALERT***

The fourth episode featured a sub plot mini version of Rounders (one of my favorite films) and was the point at which I decided I was hooked.

Episode five was another favorite as it had a high school girl’s slumber party featuring girl’s getting drunk playing truth or dare and making out.  Did I mention I love this show yet.  Little girls then proceed to go to a bar and keep playing games, meaning making out with creepy old men and almost getting Dan in another fight, good times.

Episode six, just stirred up more drama as another girl is introduced into the fold as Dan’s ex-girlfriend.  The episode centered around a dance where everyone wear’s masks.  I’m quite jealous of these people and the lives they lead, I really want to go to a party like that.  Once you start this show each episode just wets your appetite.  I can’t get enough.  I was able to catch up on the show within just two days of watching.  It has the addictive qualities of an O.C., Lost or 24.  The only shows I’ve ever wasted entire days catching up on past seasons to get caught up to date.

Episode 7 starts off in a strip club and the entire episode centers around a strip club.  Seriously, they are hitting all sorts of ideas for shows that are right up my alley.  Fuck yeah, devil child (Chuck) just brought up to his dad (huge investor, too much money, doesn’t know what to do with it) an idea of buying a strip club.  Episode 7 did feature some weird flashbacks and made up dreams with blurry pictures, so far the worst scenes of the season.  Yes, Chuck’s dad bought the strip club.  Only good things can come of this and by good I clearly mean bad.  Another similarity to O.C., there is a scumbag dad who gets int trouble for fraud just like Marissa’s dad.  And the ending is absolutely awesome, I want to fuck in a Limo.

Episode 8.  Haha, perfect girl loses viriginity to sleeze ball, I love it.  I rarely comment on clothes, but seriously Vanessa’s outfit with different colored hearts all over it is hideous.  There is officially a part in every episode.  I feel like my life’s one big party and I don’t even compare to Chuck Bass.  Have I mentioned how fun it looks to be a part of this high class ridiculous society.  A little disappointed they didn’t bring the strip club back this episode.  I’m finally not jealous to be at one of their parties, they are playing guitar hero and everyone is standing around watching, lame. And the episode ends the same way as the last one did, no surprise, high school girls are so dumb and easy to take advantage of.

***END OF SPOILER ALERT***

One last thing about episode 8 that doesn’t give anything away.  Walking in on your divorced parents cuddling and trying to work out their problems would be a strange feeling.  That might be the only time you ever want your parents to be having sex.

I was reading US Weekly this week on the road trip back from Lambeau Field when I learned some interesting news.  The lead guy (Nate) from this show is dating/doing Carrie Underwood in real life.  Any guy who can pull that off in real life is a baller and has gained the utmost respect from me.  Lastly, AllAmerican just called me to tell me how much he likes the new Natasha Bedingfield song and I completely agree.  So, I’m currently watching Gossip Girl and talking about Natasha Bedingfield.  Editors Note: the author is straight.
